It’s hard predicting the industries that will guide the future economy. With many variables in place and complicated details, it seems doubtful that many predictions will come to fruition. But with that being said, one of the safest assumptions to make about the future will be that technology will continue to grow. How exactly is yet to be seen. But as technology continues to play an ever-important part of our daily lives, it’s worth taking a look at technology that is currently and will continue to shape the future. While by no means comprehensive, below are three areas of the industry that will see rapid change in the upcoming years.

Mobile

To nobody’s surprise, mobile technology numbers continue to climb up the charts. It doesn’t seem too long ago that the smartphone was being introduced, but in 2015 global mobile data traffic grew 74 percent alone.  With the steady introduction of new smartphones and tablets into the market, this trend will likely permanently change how users interact and engage with the Internet. It’s hard to put a timeline on when mobile will completely take over, but it’s well on its way as nearly half of Internet users come from mobile. Desktop may have its place in corporate settings but other than that it’s safe to say that it’s clock is ticking.

The Internet of Things and Home Automation

Given the increase in smartphone usage and the access that the cloud gives us at all times, home automation and the internet of things (IoT) will likely change how people interact with common household items. Ever leave your house, get halfway to your destination but question whether or not you locked the front door? Through the IoT, locks, thermostats, and other appliances can all be controlled remotely with the touch of a button – all from devices like a smartphone. The Internet of Things connects everyday “things” to the Internet, making them easy to use regardless of location.

Data Security

Considering the previously mentioned numbers that highlight the rapid growth of technology that depends on the Internet, it’s safe to assume that the information will have to be protected. Not only does it directly apply to individuals and their personal privacy – such as accessing bank statements and sharing sensitive information – but it also relates to corporations and companies. All it takes is one hack or a glitch for a company to lose sensitive information that could cost them millions (or maybe billions) of dollars – as well as client and customer trust. As a result of the growing demand in data protection, the BLS reports that information security analysts are projected to experience 18 percent job growth through 2024, which is considered much faster than average.
